Elkader, Iowa — August 17-18, 2019 — Northeast Iowa hosted its fifth annual Art in the Park Fine Art Festival, a regionally recognized event, held on the third weekend every August. This year Art in the Park was held on Saturday, August 17, from 10 AM – 5 PM and Sunday, August 18, from 10 AM – 4 PM at Founders’ Park on the bank of the Turkey River in historic Elkader, Iowa.
The festival featured 50 fine artists from across the region who have been juried into the 2019 event. They offered a variety of artwork showcasing ceramics, drawing, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, metal, sculpture, wood, and more. Visitors had a chance to purchase, view, and enjoy original art and meet the artists who created it.
This summer, along with Art in the Park, Elkader celebrated several new murals that have been completed throughout the downtown alleyways by the Art in the Alley Project. Artist Brian Davis, of High Point, North Carolina, was hard at work during the festival weekend. He completed not only one, but two awesome murals over the course of the weekend!
In addition to viewing and purchasing original fine art from the region’s best artists, there was an eclectic musical lineup that included Strawberry Point entertainer Beau Timmerman, Feed the Dog out of Wisconsin, Cedar Rapids favorite Craig Erickson, Minneapolis singer Savannah Smith, and more.
As in previous years, a tent housed kid’s art activities, an area youth art exhibit, and kids art workshops by festival volunteers and ArtHaus out of Decorah, Iowa. The silent auction of “Creative Chairs” (a community art project) was held for a second year and helped raise money to put on this event. Again we shared in wine tastings, and delicious food from a variety of local and regional vendors.
Jillian Herrmann, one of the event’s founders, shared, “Each year the event has grown in prestige, and we believe that’s happened due to the enthusiastic support of the volunteers and sponsors who are eager to celebrate and support the arts in our community. We are already looking forward to our 6th annual event held in August 2020!”
Art in the Park is an event of Main Street Elkader and supported by the community and volunteers that make it possible. Find more information online at: www.ArtintheParkElkader.com and Facebook.com/ArtintheParkElkader.
